Everyone knows how to play the role of a tourist when they travel somewhere new, but fitting in with the locals is a bit different. During your next trip to Galveston in August, you too can fit in with the locals by seeing what kind of activities they enjoy. The month of August is perfect for this as the busy summer season is starting to wind down, giving you more time and space to enjoy. Here is how to do Galveston like a local during the month of August:
Check Out the Local Farmers Market
One of the best ways to get a closer insight into Galveston is to always check out the local farmers market. Galveston’s Own Farmers Market continues throughout the month of August, where you can find local farmers and artisans on hand providing a variety of goods. Local farmers will provide fresh and locally grown produce which is perfect to make a meal with back at your vacation rental. You will find great prices and the best produce here in the city. You will also find local coffee and baked goods vendors for a perfect treat as you walk around. Additional vendors on hand also are selling pet treats, sandwiches, all natural soaps, salsas and spices, jams, and so much more. If you prefer to find a gift for someone back home, you can also browse the local artisans that are selling their oil paintings, candles, jewelry, ceramics, and more. During the month of August you will find the Galveston’s Own Farmers Market taking place on Sundays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM over at The Depot on Market.
Okra Fest
If you enjoy Galveston’s Own Farmers Market, you will also find a delightful celebration the locals love, Okra Fest! This is a one night event with proceeds benefitting the market. Okra Fest is an extravagant gala where the community of Galveston comes together to celebrate the farmers market. Attendees will be able to receive a special dinner made with ingredients from the local farms along with access to the open bar. Live music will be on hand encouraging a night of dancing. Similar with other galas, attendees are encouraged to dress up in your finest and loudest attire that will draw all eyes to you. What makes Okra Fest set apart from other galas is the OkraWear. Attendees are encouraged to create or wear custom headpieces that include okra for a unique and fabulous addition to your attire. The 11th Annual Okra Fest will take place at The Lyceum on August 2nd starting at 7:00 PM (5:00 early access for VIP ticketholders).
