Strand Movie Nights
The summer season is a great time to kick back and relax while watching one of your favorite films. Each summer season the Galveston Historical Foundation presents the Strand Movie Nights. This much appreciated event returns to Hendley Green Park this year with a monthly movie series that will appease the whole family. Families are encouraged to show up with blankets and chairs so they can get comfy on the park lawn. You are encouraged to bring snacks and the event is BYOB so feel free to bring any canned beverages to enjoy with the movie. Local vendors and food trucks will also be on hand throughout each showing so you can purchase food and drink too. The summer movie series will include Soul on June 13th, Jaws on July 26th, Back to the Future on August 16th, and The Goonies on September 20th. This is an absolutely free event so bring the whole family with you!

Galveston hosts the official Easter Egg Hunt located at Seawolf Park once again this year. You cannot say no to a great market, especially when the crisp spring air is as inviting as it is here in Galveston. The area features our very own spring and summer market properly called the Galveston Island Market. This is a vibrant marketplace that features a variety of handmade goods created by the local artisans in the area. This is the perfect way for the community to get together and support our local artists in Galveston. The Galveston Island Market takes place once a month during the spring and summer seasons. You can shop around the different vendors who put out incredible items such as paintings, jewelry, pottery, textiles, and much more. Each item is handmade making for an incredible gift for someone back home or for yourself.
There will also be plenty of exciting activities on hand as well including live music, artisanal food, and family friendly activities to enjoy. You will be able to engage with the Galveston community and learn more from the artists in interactive demonstrations and hands on workshops. Galveston Island Brewing Company 5K Beer Run
Sometimes life is all about balance and that is especially true here in Galveston. This April, you can partake in Galveston Island Brewing Company’s 5K Beer Run that is exactly what it sounds like. Just like any other 5K run in Galveston, you will be racing along the famous Seawall for a beautiful backdrop to your run. This chip timed race will keep track of your finish time so you have something to show off at the end. Instead of your usual medal at the end of the race, you will instead be given the opportunity to enjoy two pints from Galveston Island Brewery Company’s very own beer selection. Catch your breath and sip on a cold beer as you enjoy the nice spring day. The Galveston Island Brewing Company 5K Beer Run is scheduled to take place on April 26th starting at 8:00 AM. Make sure to stop by Galveston Island Brewery Company at some point during your visit to enjoy a pint of their award winning beer. The event will benefit the Galveston Island Humane Society allowing you to support a great local cause.
Annual Oleander Garden Festival
Also taking place on April 26th is the Annual Oleander Garden Festival that is stunning array of beautiful flowers in an outdoor space. This local event is returning once again this year after being a hit in the area. Head on over to the Betty Head Oleander Garden Park that features over 30 different varieties of Oleanders on display. This is a family friendly event where you can enjoy the perfect day outdoors and be surrounding by stunning flowers of all colors. You can simply enjoy the views or purchase an Oleander or two to take home with you. Additional plants and flowers will also be for sale. Enjoy live music as presented by the talented Galveston Ukulele Society who will hit the stage from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The displays are larger than you thought possible that feature all kinds of exciting details. Make sure to also check out the rest of the museum to see exciting exhibits will real life trains too. Railfest will take place on April 26th and 27th and is part of your entry into the Galveston Railroad Museum.

Go Bird Watching
Travelers are not the only visitors that make their way to Galveston each spring. The area will see some wonderful wildlife in the form of birds migrating to Galveston from spring to fall. These birds can be seen all over with a watchful eye. This spring, enjoy some bird watching during the daylight hours. Galveston even has its own official city bird with the Reddish Egret that calls Galveston home all year long. In fact, you will be able to see over 300 different species of birds here in the area including owls, hawks, plovers, pelicans, and more. Time to Hit the Beach
Whenever you think of Spring Break, you will most likely think of sunny skies and sandy beaches. That is exactly what you will find here in Galveston for a wonderful vacation getaway. Galveston features 32 miles of beaches that string along the Gulf of Mexico coastline. You will find clean pristine beaches at popular spots such as Stewart Beach and East Beach. You will find East Beach at the easternmost part of Galveston Island. Here, you will have access to a boardwalk, pavilion, and entertainment stage that is sure to have plenty of performances over Spring Break. You will also find a children’s playground perfect for the little ones. Chair and umbrella rentals are available so you can leave everything at home. This is also one of the few beaches that permits alcohol on the beach in case you were wishing you had an adult beverage in hand. Stewart Beach has similar amenities and has been voted as a top family friendly beach park. Babe’s Beach is another local beach that has the clearest water that sparkles in the sun. By the end of March, you will find the Gulf water to be warm enough for swimming. Make sure to pack everything you need for a beach day including sandals, swimming clothes, sunscreen, and shades. Sandcastle Lessons
One of the most popular activities that you can enjoy here in Galveston is sandcastle lessons. Galveston is home to some professional sandcastle builders that will be on hand to help you create a masterpiece in the sand. This year there will be free sandcastle lessons just in time for Spring Break taking place on March 9th and 16th. You will find lessons at several times each day with lessons offered at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. If your Spring Break does not line up with these lessons, fret not, as lessons will be available every Saturday from Memorial Day and Labor Day perfect for a summer visit. The lessons are located over at East Beach and provide some supplies but having your own buckets and shovels is highly encouraged. Come have fun in the sand!
Visit the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier
Spring Break is a perfect time to visit some of the best attractions here in the area. There is nothing more famous in Galveston than our very own Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. You will find family oriented attractions for a thrilling day out on the pier. Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier features many different rides and is one of the few locations with rides that will take you over the water. Board the Texas Flyer to be spun high up in the area or take on the Iron Shark for a thrilling roller coaster. There are even rides for younger children including the Texas Tea cups or Pier Pileup Bumper Cars. You will also find a variety of midway style games where you can earn fun prizes. Games include classic favorites ring toss, balloon pop, basketball hoops, and more. The fun doesn’t stop there either as you can also find 5D theater showings. This is Galveston’s yearly 5K race taking place just before Christmas. Thousands of participants dressed up as Santa will be in the crowd giving it a lively feel. The magical experience of the race is further complimented by outrageous holiday decorations and live festive music so everyone even those not running can enjoy the event. Get a family picture before or after the race (depending how sweaty you want to look!) in your best Santa attire. Registration for either race is required beforehand to ensure you a spot on race day. Menard House
Galveston has an incredibly rich history here in Texas with many neighborhoods and buildings being 200 years old! Exploring the historic side of Galveston is always recommended during your stay. Many visitors will make their way to Menard House during their visit to take a tour of the oldest building in Galveston. This building was built in 1829 by one of the founders of Galveston and features a Greek revival style. Most of the furniture and the rest of the furnishings inside the home are all original dating back to the early 1800s. Eventually, the home was sold to other families and came into disrepair. Now, the home has been repaired and reconstructed to look just the way it did when it was first built.
The Galveston Historical Foundation offers tours and private events here at Menard House, allowing it to be a museum of Galveston’s earliest days. Each Halloween, the Menard House opens its front gates to trick-or-treaters. While the home will not be open for tours that evening, families will be allowed onto the property, allowing you to see this incredible building up close. Individual bags of candy will be handed out to the costumed children, making sure they get what they came for. The Menard House will have its gates open for trick-or-treaters on October 31st from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM and is free to enter.
Halloween Spooktacular
Galveston is also home to The Bryan Museum, a local museum that houses one of the largest collections in the world featuring American West and Texas artifacts, artwork, and historical documents. The Bryan Museum is located inside the historic Galveston Orphans Home and continues to be a local tradition to this day 10 years after opening to the public. Visitors can stop by The Bryan Museum Wednesday through Sunday and browse their incredible collections in person.
The Bryan Museum also hosts a variety of exciting events throughout the year that are each more exciting than the last. Each fall season, The Bryan Museum hosts the Halloween Spooktacular that is a treat for both adults and children alike. Come experience the Halloween Spooktacular this year on Sunday October 27th where children ages 12 and younger will be able to get into the museum for absolutely free. The whole family will be able to enjoy a variety of Halloween themed activities including a scavenger hunt, fall arts and crafts, a ghost hunt out in the garden, special photo places to snap a photo, a walking costume parade, outdoor games, and more. Listen to spooky stories out over in the gazebo.

Decorate candy stations will be set up around the museum grounds where the little ones will be able to get all the candy they could want. This annual festival is scheduled to take place August 30th through September 1st for a weekend of wine and festivities. The Galveston Island Wine Festival takes place at the Moody Gardens once again so you know that the location will match the excitement of the event. The Galveston Island Wine Festival kicks off that Friday with a Welcome Reception and Seven on Seven Seafood Extravaganza. This is a unique experience where top tier chefs will be on hand to create seasonal dishes that are paired with wines from all over the world.
Return the next evening to enjoy the Penguins & Pinot: Grand Tasting at the Aquarium. As the name suggests, you will be having a wine tasting at the aquarium where you tour the Oceans of the World and enjoy a variety of wine, spirits, and food bites. There will even be marine animal encounters that are sure to take you to new depths! Wrap up your evening with the Wine’d Down After Hours at Palm Beach where live entertainment, dancing, and a dazzling fireworks display will close up the evening.

Galveston is home to many different professional sandcastle builders who you can book to show you how to create your own works of art. Over Labor Day Weekend, however, you can enjoy free sandcastle building lessons over at East Beach. On Saturday August 31st at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM you will find these lessons to be absolutely free. The professionals will be bringing a limited amount of equipment so make sure to bring your own in case the event gets popular. No registration is required in advance, so you can simply show up and learn all about this popular beach activity!
Bucket Brigade Interpretive Tours
Exploring the beaches of Galveston is always a popular pastime so make sure to join the Bucket Brigade as they bring back their Interpretive Tours. These educational tours and a fun way to see the marine creatures and different parts of Galveston beaches. Participants will get hands on activities as you explore the turbid water of Galveston, seaweed, marine debris, and much more. These tours also take place at East Beach and will be available on Saturday August 31st and Sunday September 1st. Each tour last for approximately 45 minutes in length.
Pride at East Beach
Labor Day Weekend is also when Galveston will be celebrating our Pride weekend. Specifically, the festivities will take place on Each Beach along with Robert’s Lafitte bar. The celebration of Pride is a celebration of love and equality that will be complete with pageantry, exciting parties, and much more. The Pride Pageant will crown a Mr. and Miss Pride along with several other exciting highlights. Don’t miss out on the Beach Bash with live DJs and snacks or the Neon Party. The Three Pyramids
Finding the Moody Gardens here in Galveston is extremely easy; simply head over to the three pyramids that stand tall near the coast. The Moody Gardens is a beautiful amusement park that features several connecting areas inside each of the three pyramids. Visitors are able to purchase passes for the individual areas of the park, but you will save the most when you purchase a value pass that will get you into all areas of the park that day!
The first pyramid is the Aquarium Pyramid that is a sprawling aquarium complete with huge habitats for aquatic creatures. The Aquarium Pyramid is one of the largest aquariums in the Southwest and features 1.5 million gallons of water. The incredible critters that you can see up close include penguins, jellyfish, sharks, seals, tropical fish, and much more. A variety of conservation messages can be found around the aquarium to educate how important it is to protect our oceans. You can even get behind the scenes with animal encounters that include the Penguin Encounters and River Otter Encounters. Or visit the Coral Reef Lab to learn about this fragile species in a behind the scenes lab experience.
The Rainforest Pyramid takes you above the water for a full treetop canopy experience. Over 1,700 exotic animals and plants are protected here in the habitat for you to see in expansive exhibits. The animals include river otters, komodo dragons, ocelots, tamarins, Saki monkeys, and a variety of birds that fly all over the enclosed space. The habitat is designed after each of the rainforests found in Africa, Asia, and the Americas will a different experience found inside each one. You will be able to get up close to many of the different exhibits and see how these lovely animals interact with each other. You may even catch the sloths sleeping in the trees as they have free roam over all the exhibits!
The final pyramid is the Discovery Museum that brings science to life in sprawling exhibits. The Moody Gardens will be opening up Body Worlds RX: Prescriptions for Healthy Living her soon that demonstrate how our healthy bodies operate. This exhibit will offer a unique perspective on preventative healthcare while having you learn all about the human body. In addition to the Discovery Museum you will also find the 3D and 4D movie theatres that offer a truly unique perspective on film. The state of the art projects will immerse you into an experience like no other. The 3D movie selection includes Fungi: The Way of Life and Cephalopods: Aliens of the Deep, both truly enriching and educational films. The 4D movie selection includes Octopus: Blue Planet II that adds additional experiences to the film.
Seasonal Attractions
You will find that the Moody Gardens also features incredible seasonal attractions that rotate throughout the year. Summer will be here before you know it so make sure to explore the Palm Beach attraction that is open during on weekends during the month of May and every day starting on June 1st. This outdoor water park features Galveston’s only white sand beach along with a variety of attractions including the lazy river, wave pool, tower slides, splashpad, and Aquarium Adventure Playground. The Shoreline Café will offer all the food and beverages including adult beverages you could want as you relax underneath the sun. Visitors will also find the ropes course and zip line area available when weather permits here at Moody Gardens. Take the to treetops as you fly at high speeds down a zip line course.
