Over 15 years ago, Hurricane Ike devastated the Gulf Coast here along Galveston leaving destruction through its path. This historic storm uprooted and destroyed thousands of trees. While it is sad to see so much canopy destroyed many broken trees were turned into whimsical tree sculptures throughout the East End Historical District. Local artists took what was left behind of the tree trunks and shaped them into these beautiful sculptures. Now you can go on a self-guided tour to find as many of the tree sculptures as you can find. Each float will be covered in patriotic displays as they march down Seawall Blvd. The parade typically starts over at 19th St and Seawall and will eventually end around 45th Street. The parade kicks off on July 4th at 6:00 PM for the whole city to see as the sun starts to set in the backdrop. As the sun finally sets, you can get ready for the next event on the Fourth of July.
4th of July Fireworks
The 4th of July is never complete without a dazzling display of fireworks that will light up the night sky. Come enjoy a splendor of colors with the 4th of July Fireworks that is part of the Galveston 4th of July Parade event. After everyone has had a chance to enjoy the parade you can get ready for the fireworks that will be shot over the Gulf of Mexico. The fireworks show typically starts around 9:15 PM when the sun has fully set. The fireworks will be shot off near 37th St so the closer you are to the area the better. The fireworks show is expected to be approximately 20 minutes long where near countless clusters of fireworks will reflect off the ocean’s surface. You will find plenty of viewing areas all along Seawall Blvd but make sure to get to your spot early as most of Galveston will be looking for spots.

Galveston hosts our very own Memorial Day event with the annual Navy Museum Memorial Day Celebration. The Galveston Navy Museum is located right along the Seawolf Parkway where you can find a moment to commemorate our military member’s legacies. From 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM you can enjoy free admission and parking for the museum along with live music, cupcakes, and more. This is a great way to check out the Galveston Navy Museum for the first time while honoring our fallen heroes. Don’t miss out on this local event taking place on May 26th here at the Galveston Navy Museum.
Time at the Beach

You are encouraged to bring snacks and the event is BYOB so feel free to bring any canned beverages to enjoy with the movie. The lessons are absolutely free to attend and all you need are your own buckets and shovels; the lesson provides some equipment but is quickly taken! This spring you will find the sandcastle lessons taking place over spring break on March 9th and 16th at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM each day. Come enjoy some fun under the sun!
Go Bird Watching
Travelers are not the only visitors that make their way to Galveston each spring. The area will see some wonderful wildlife in the form of birds migrating to Galveston from spring to fall. These birds can be seen all over with a watchful eye. This spring, enjoy some bird watching during the daylight hours. Galveston even has its own official city bird with the Reddish Egret that calls Galveston home all year long. In fact, you will be able to see over 300 different species of birds here in the area including owls, hawks, plovers, pelicans, and more. This is a great way to reel up larger fish such as red snapper that are more difficult to find just off the coast. Time to Hit the Beach
Whenever you think of Spring Break, you will most likely think of sunny skies and sandy beaches. That is exactly what you will find here in Galveston for a wonderful vacation getaway. Galveston features 32 miles of beaches that string along the Gulf of Mexico coastline. You will find clean pristine beaches at popular spots such as Stewart Beach and East Beach. You will find East Beach at the easternmost part of Galveston Island. Here, you will have access to a boardwalk, pavilion, and entertainment stage that is sure to have plenty of performances over Spring Break. You will also find a children’s playground perfect for the little ones. Chair and umbrella rentals are available so you can leave everything at home. This is also one of the few beaches that permits alcohol on the beach in case you were wishing you had an adult beverage in hand. Stewart Beach has similar amenities and has been voted as a top family friendly beach park. Babe’s Beach is another local beach that has the clearest water that sparkles in the sun. Sandcastle Lessons
One of the most popular activities that you can enjoy here in Galveston is sandcastle lessons. Galveston is home to some professional sandcastle builders that will be on hand to help you create a masterpiece in the sand. This year there will be free sandcastle lessons just in time for Spring Break taking place on March 9th and 16th. You will find lessons at several times each day with lessons offered at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. If your Spring Break does not line up with these lessons, fret not, as lessons will be available every Saturday from Memorial Day and Labor Day perfect for a summer visit. The lessons are located over at East Beach and provide some supplies but having your own buckets and shovels is highly encouraged. Come have fun in the sand!
Visit the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier
Spring Break is a perfect time to visit some of the best attractions here in the area. There is nothing more famous in Galveston than our very own Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. You will find family oriented attractions for a thrilling day out on the pier. Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier features many different rides and is one of the few locations with rides that will take you over the water. Board the Texas Flyer to be spun high up in the area or take on the Iron Shark for a thrilling roller coaster. There are even rides for younger children including the Texas Tea cups or Pier Pileup Bumper Cars. You will also find a variety of midway style games where you can earn fun prizes.
